We are excited to announce that we have a special treat for you on Monday, 27th of February at 7.30pm. Okinawa Americana, a great duo offering a unique convergence of ancient Okinawan music with Mississippi blues, rhythm and rock, will come to Sydney at the end of the month to kick off their Australian Debut Tour. David Ralston (originally from Indiana and a phenomenal blues and slide guitar player, singer and songwriter) and Merry Megumi Gushi (who plays the traditional three-stringed Okinawan Sanshin and sings in Okinawan language and in Japanese) played at Funakoshi Sensei’s 100 year ceremony of introducing karate to mainland Japan held at Shuri Castle in 2020.
The duo is delighted to come to our dojo on the day of their arrival in Australia and perform a couple of acoustic songs for us at the end of our evening session. Whilst Monday Class normally primarily caters for our Novices & Intermediates, we are inviting Adult students of all grades to attend. Family and friends are welcome to watch the performance at 7.30pm.
On their tour of Australia, Okinawa Americana will do gratis performances for the kids and staff at the Royal Children’s Hospital and the Monash children’s cancer centre in Melbourne and also perform for free at another hospital fundraiser. For those keen to see more, tickets for their gig in Sydney on 1 March 2023 at the Vanguard can be purchased HERE.
We look forward to seeing you all on the 27th.
